I love teaching literary analysis, but it can be so challenging for students. This is especially true when the prompts are open-ended. I use this poster to help students brainstorm that inference statement they will spend the rest of the paragraph or essay trying to prove. This 8x11 is great for a handout, but this freebie also includes a larger poster for your classroom as well! Click on the link in my profile for this freebie! .

Just finished bundling seven of my favorite scaffolded reading lesson and graphic organizer units to use with ANY text! Literary analysis, summarizing nonfiction, and more...so many resources that connect to CC reading literature and informational text standards. I love having the flexibility to swap texts from year to year without having to start from scratch with teaching resources. These are staples. Link in profile! 😊

Students can analyze poetry, and it can be fun! I always try to think about how I break down the analysis process into bite-sized chunks. Scaffolding student responses with questions that lead them from identification to deeper thinking helps. Grab this new resource to use with any song or poem through the link in my profile 👆🏼😊! .

Are you tired of the way you do your novel studies? How about getting the kids more actively involved in the process? Set up stations where they can discuss important elements of any novel in a way that teaches them the process of analysis. They do more thinking, collaborating, and moving - and you get to circulate and help the groups that need more direction. It really is an effective way to analyze text. If you’d like some stations that are ready for you to use, check the 🔗 in my bio @room213tpt #literaryanalysis #novelstudy #learningstations #teacher #iteach #teachersfollowteachers https://bit.ly/2OOv4A1

I just finished planning Unit Three for the new AP Lit Course Framework. Using this as their guide, students will thoroughly read, discuss, explain, and analyze Their Eyes Were Watching God through the study of character, setting, structure, narration, and figurative language. Complete with two summative assessments, including a literary analysis and the creation of a metaphorical timeline of Janie’s journey to the horizon. Head over to my #teacherspayteachers store to check it out! Link is in bio. This unit can also be used with other 9-12 ELA courses.

REWILDING 🐺🔥
📸 by @cb.stories
Today is the first of a two-part series on the podcast, talking all about how Women Who Run With The Wolves, written by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, has changed my outlook on womanhood, spirituality, and how I want to live my life! ❣️⚡️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This book came into my life right around the time I was starting up the Spiritual Fem as a platform and as a podcast. It opened my eyes to why I felt this deep remembering of spiritual empowerment as a woman.💆‍♀️ I am so excited to share my ideas about this book with you today, and with a bonus episode next week! 🙏
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This episode focusses on the first three chapters of the book. I dive deep into why every woman will feel connected with the concept of “Wild Woman”, and why we all deserve to do the deep work to connect with her again.💞 Our intuition is our greatest gift, and through stories and analyses we can grasp the ideas and feelings of what it will feel like once we tap into that again. Wild Woman is within us all, and she is waiting to be unleashed. 💫
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Join me on this journey into the deep, luscious forest, will you? 🌲✨

Hi everyone! Welcome to my brand new #bookblog! I'm Lee, and I wanted to use this platform to really dive deep into some good books. 📚
Each month, I'll discuss various aspects of a book, from theme to conflict to dialogue. This first month, I'll go through the different features I plan to post about, and talk about those.
So today I'll introduce the introduction! It's exactly what it says on the tin. I’ll introduce the month’s book, why I chose it, and where you can find it. I’ll also include things like genre, publication date, and other bibliographical information. 🔍
Anyway, thanks for joining me on my literary adventure, and watch this space for more introductory posts! 💜

🔍 Anyway, thanks for joining me on my literary adventure, and watch this space for more introductory posts! 💜 . . . . #books #bookcommunity #bookworm #bookstagram #BookAddict #BookNerd #AmReading #BookChat #GoodReads #BookWorld #bookworms #bookwormforlife #booklovers #booknerdigans #igbooks #readingtime #closeleeread #literaryanalysis #literarylife #readingnow #ReadingClub

If you’re teaching literary analysis- or anything for that matter - start with backward design. Identify the skills the kids need, and then scaffold them with short, focused assignments.

Ghibli movies get better each time you watch them.
I was watching Princess Mononoke again today, and I was thinking...I interpret it in a few ways. The first is what happens when you allow things like hate, anger, or greed to win: everything dies. The Forest Spirit dying is ultimately caused by everyone acting out of their own hate and/or greed...Eboshi wanting prosperity and success more than anything made her willing to kill the Forest Spirit, Jigo manipulated the warriors and her to hunt the Forest Spirit because he wanted to be rich, and the Emperor (though he's only mentioned) wanted eternal life, and hired people to kill the Forest Spirit for him. The result is first nature dying, then the humans, nothing was spared.
Ghibli has similar themes across different movies, for example in Castle in the Sky there's a quote, 'No matter how many weapons you have, no matter how great your technology might be, the world cannot live without love!' And this is shown perfectly in the destruction of Iron Town. Iron Town is implied to be more technologically advanced than the rest of the land (they use guns while even the emperor's men use arrows and darts), yet it too was no match from the body of the Forest Spirit, which again symbolizes what happens when there is only hate and greed.
The second interpretation is closely tied to the first, only it's more focused on nature. The Forest Spirit can also symbolize the forest itself, or nature as a whole. When the forest and its animals die, so does everything else. The Forest Spirit's body sucking the life out of everything is an expedited process of what was already happening: the trees being destroyed, the animals either dying, or being driven away. San and Ashitaka giving the head back shows that only humans can fix what humans have wrought...and it needs to be done before it's too late. They fix it, and that's why the trees can start to regrow. The benefit to humans fixing it (giving the head back, or negating the already bad effects they've had on nature), is symbolized by their wounds healing.

So in HS English there has been a big push for close reading, which really does improve comprehension and a deeper understanding of a text. I made my own version of a TPCASTT worksheet, which works awesome on poetry, short stories, or excerpts of a larger text. I use this ALL THE TIME. It’s an awesome tool to get kids used to deeper analysis, and gives them the opportunity to find textual evidence as well! Check it out! Would you like your students to get better at tracking evidence as they read? Give them an idea to explore as they read. Then, after they’ve read a section, have them record quotations that develop the idea. We did this for To Kill a Mockingbird, and by the time they’d finished reading, they had lots of evidence to use when it came time to support the theme statements they developed. I appreciated The Street (1946) by Ann Petry. I’m not sure I can say I enjoyed it, because it isn’t a book you enjoy. It is a quick read, but not a beach read. The novel’s ultimate question is: Who gets to achieve the American Dream?
We follow Lutie Johnson, a single black mother who moves into a new apartment. The street on which is stands in Harlem is dirty and looms as its own character in the book. The people who surround Lutie, only trying to do what is best for her son and earn her way up to better circumstances, are involved in prostitution, gambling, cheating, lying, and lusting. This causes trouble for Lutie.
As I traced these characters, I found clear symbolism of Satan, snakes, and a white master. As these symbols coalesce, we find that Lutie has literally moved into hell, and her situation devolves from there. The street is definitely NOT paved in gold. I even saw echoes of Scarlett O’Hara as Lutie vows to pull herself out of poverty. Unfortunately, there is no happy ending. There is, however, an awful lot of desperation.
The racial tensions in this novel are gritty and blunt. As a white person reading about these realistic circumstances and emotions, I felt empathetic and I had to set my own good opinion of myself aside. There is complexity in how the reader is forced to contemplate and understand just how such difficulties can lead to hatred and frustration.
This is a thinking book. It created lively and intense conversation in my Real Readers book club. I am impressed and will definitely be reading more of Ann Petry’s work.

#margueriteduras #thelover #elamante #mujeresescritoras #womenwriters #thelovermargueriteduras #indochina #thenorthchinalover #literaryanalysis #bookopinion #literaryopinion #opiniónliteraria

How does a literary analysis unit for heritage speakers or advanced levels that can be used with any novel sound? Amazing right!! I'm super happy with how this turned out and I can't wait to use it with my students this year!
This is such a versatile product because you can use it for a class novel, lit circles, or to differentiate for heritage speakers that are in a class that is too easy for them. Link in profile!

Debate over which version of The Shining is superior – Stephen King’s original novel or Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation – has been contentious since the film’s release.
King has stated that he felt it was a poor adaptation, to which many of his fans agree. And Kubrick, never being one to miss a moment to NOT elaborate on a topic, remained steadfastly silent, leaving his admirers to deduce their own ideas of Stanley’s thoughts on the matter – which is typically along the lines of King being a hack who should feel honored to have his name next to a true artist such as Kubrick.
Now, The Shining is one of my favorite films. And Kubrick is, unequivocally, my favorite director. And yet, I fully understand and agree with King’s criticisms of the movie.
As a writer, King can be relentless. The man doesn’t believe in plot armor, and he’ll lay waste to characters indiscriminately. But despite the apparent bleakness his stories can present, they do tend to carry a strong undercurrent of hope. And The Shining is no exception, as the Jack Torrance character is given a moment of redemption before the novel concludes.
The film, while maintaining good ultimately triumphing over evil, removes that moment, and allows Jack to go on his rampage uninhibited.
Further, King’s novel is semi-autobiographical. During the composition, he was an alcoholic, consistently coming to blows with the demons that plagued his personal life. Naturally, he’s going to be more protective of this particular novel than, say, The Running Man — the movie of which is pretty much an adaptation in name only.
But despite any seeming concurrence with the “novel wins” argument, I find Stanley’s work to be a masterclass in filmmaking. And it is decidedly a staple of pop culture.
There was an episode of Friends where Joey is talking about his favorite scenes from the book. However, he keeps referencing scenes that were only in the movie, thus, providing the joke that he never actually read the book. Perhaps it further exhibits that Kubrick created an iconic work of art, that even the doltish Joey Tribbiani can reference it.

• • #writersofinstagram #literaryanalysis #stephenking #stanleykubrick

A sliver of Nana’s collection... .

I have always admired her shelves, and was told yesterday she said I was to have first pick when she passed. I have loved these shelves as she arranged them, all her books together, telling the story of her as a reader. I want everything and nothing. .

For the spring semester, I created sticky note analysis activities for The Hate U Give. The activities went so well with my students that I decided to turn sticky note analysis into a product line. Last month, I added sticky note analysis activities for Dear Martin, Romeo and Juliet, and To Kill a Mockingbird. I just started working on Of Mice and Men. What novels would you like to see in the product line?

Another #folkloreandfairytales research book finished! I felt like this book was kind of repetitive and really just reinforced the fact that I need to read the older sources sooner rather than later, but it was cool to think about in terms of how to structure my own work.

I thought it would be interesting to start thinking about the significance of first lines in a book. It’s my understanding that authors have a meaning for most everything.

I highly recommend one read William Wordsworth’s prose from his 1805 Prelude, Book Fifth, “The Dream of the Arab”. I found it enlightening, touching, edifying and mystical. A very good read indeed.*

NEW BLOG ENTRY IS UP!
Literary Guide is a compilation of posts of literary analyses that I have made for my graduate studies. I hope they help students in understanding more and appreciating literature.
The section continues with Exhibit #003, focusing on Leda and the Swan, an English poem written by William Butler Yeats, based on the classic tale of Leda, the wife of King Tyndareus, who was molested by Zeus, who took the form of a swan.
Spill more ink by sharing it to your friends and students!

The section continues with Exhibit #002, focusing on Politics, an English poem written by Merlinda Bobis, one of the greatest contemporary Filipina (and Bikolana) writers out there. Currently, she is residing in Australia, but her works on feminism and Bicol culture still influence Philippine literature to this day. Other works include Banana Heart Summer and the Cantata of the Warrior Woman, Daragang Magayon.

Would you like to stop being the hardest working person in the room everyday? As scary as it might be, it can be a highly effective strategy to let your kids give each other feedback. They do lots of critical thinking, and you do less grading - sounds pretty good, eh? You can find out more through the link in my bio 😍 #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofig #teachersofinstagram #iteachtoo #secondaryela #literaryanalysis

“I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to.” - Taylor Swift.
One of my favorite songs of all time is “All Too Well,” and this lyric is is especially beautiful to me.
It hurts to lose someone you love, even if you know in your heart that waking away from them is the best choice.
Whether you decide to end a relationship or the other person does, you’ll feel pain and question whether it’s the right choice. But the red flags and neon signs telling you to turn back are blaring in front of your face, making it slightly less painful to walk away. Or that’s what you like to tell yourself.
But distance and time make you forget. They numb memories of passionate fights and sleepless, anxiety-ridden nights and replace those awful times with memories of passionate kisses and sleepless nights full of sharing hopes and dreams.
Now all you have are beautiful, excruciating memories and the knowledge (Or sometimes hope) that if it was meant to be, it would have been.
