“It’s life changing”
For over 2 years I’ve wanted to change the color of my walls. I’ve tried over 12 different colors, spent hundreds of dollars and many Sunday afternoons painting the wall. •
My friend Michelle (@michelleadamsmodern) encouraged me to go with white or a light wall color. She told me it would be life changing. And she was right! The new light color feels like hope, it feels bright and it feels like possibilities.
•
It’s the same when you finally find the RIGHT training program for your dog. You feel hope, you feel brighter and the door of possibilities opens for you and your dog. You get to take him to your favorite breakfast spot, on hikes and camping. You feel like the whole family can be together. •
I see so many dog owners feeling stuck, hopeless and discouraged. They are like me, testing out different colors of paint only to be disappointed and thinking they need to live with the problem.
I was in the same place a few years ago with both of my dogs. I tried all.the.things, read all the books and watched all the shows. I didn’t give up though! I knew there was an answer, one I wouldn’t feel guilty about. •
Changing your dogs naughty behavior is possible when you have the right plan to follow. Imagine all the places you can go with your dog when you know the right process. It’s life changing. •
Ps. You can learn my process for free at the Reactive Dog Workshop and you can learn how to use it in the Barkaholics Program. Link in Bio. •
Pps. My clients message and text me all the time because this plan worked for them!

How to stop puppy biting. .
“He’s a shark! 🦈 And his biting is getting worse.” .
It’s common to look at one problem, like puppy biting, and think that there’s ONE solution. And most dog owners make the mistake of focus in the problem instead of the causes and why it continues, but dogs and puppies don’t learn in a vacuum. If their needs aren’t being met, the n problem will develop. Making sure your dogs needs are met is ALWAYS the first place you start.
.
So, you might be wondering what does my puppy need to stop using my hands as a chew toy?
. (1) Two 20 - 30 minute walks a day. 🐕 (2) Brain Games. Mental stimulation to occupy their mind. Feed your puppy breakfast from these every day. I have a list on the website so click the link in Bio to learn about the one that work best. (3) Sleep! This is often over looked. Puppies need 16 hours of good quality (REM) sleep a day. A tired puppy will be cranky and bite more!
. (4) Training. Positive reinforcement training is, not only the safest and most humane, but it takes more mental energy which means it will quickly tire your puppy out! This is what I call a twofer (2 for the effort of 1). You get a tired AND well behaved pup.
.
Is your dog getting what he needs? What’s missing?
. .
Ps. Sweet little Banksy has an amazing family that is doing a great job with him!! .

Emmett is a 5-year-old Shihtzu that came from a hoarding situation with over 100 dogs in one house. Emmett has probably NEVER see the world outside of that house or backyard. Now, Emmett is living with an amazing family. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Besides the physical neglect that Emmett suffered, there is emotional damage as well. Emmett was frightened of his new human dad and would bark at him and hide in the corner. Emmett was afraid of the grass in the backyard. And, sadly, Emmett is too worried to leave his front step. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Often times dog owner make the mistake of thinking that fears come from physical abuse. It's seems logical to our human brain, fears aren't logical.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'm afraid of spiders, and I've never been physically abused by a spider. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most people have a fear of public speaking. They aren't afraid that someone in the audience is going to punch them in the face. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, if fears don't come from physical abuse, then how do they start? And if you don't know how they start, then how are you going to change them, prevent them or stop them from getting worse?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most fears develop for a lack of socialization between the ages of 3 - 12 weeks old. Fears develop when there aren't enough positive experiences. In Emmett's case, for example, he hasn't had enough, or any positive experiences. The absence of a positive experience, by 16-weeks old, automatically turns into a dangerous or scary thing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only way to change fears is through process I like to call the Reactive Rehab Method. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lucky for Emmett, he has amazing parents who are doing a great job at giving him a second chance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You can predict when your dog is going to bark, lunge, bite, snap or growl. Aggression is PREDICABLE! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brody, the sweet 5-month-old Aussie, is saying that he's nervous by flicking his tongue. This is a subtle, but common sign that a dog will use to communicate when they are nervous. If you don't know how to look for these signs, you'll miss them and your dog will barking, lunge, bite, snap or growl. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How many times have you seen this tongue flick on your iPhone after trying to take a picture of your dog? I have hundreds of clients dogs doing this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Are they nervous about me? No, probably not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So why are they flicking their tongue, you ask. Because I'm shoving my iPhone in their face. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your dog does not know what an iPhone is and that it takes a picture of their cute little face. From their perspective, this weird object (your phone or camera) is moving straight towards their face. Does that make sense now? Look at your Camera Roll and tell me how many tongue flick pictures you have? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ps. If you noticed that Brody isn't looking at the camera (or my iPhone) and flicking his tongue - good job!! He was looking at a car, person or dog - all of which he will bark at. This is the stage when Brody is able to still learn, so training can be done. If Brody's body language and stress level increase he will not be capable of learning and training is futile.

In #dogcityusa, also #beercityusa, many people want to take their dogs with them to all the #dogfriendly #ashevillebreweries and #ashevillerestaurants. Miska the #huskypuppy has been going with her #dogfamily to #ashevillebeer joints since the day they got her. And while she's already a pretty rocking girl, well socialized to the scene, she needed a few extra skills under her belt to be a welcome addition to a night on the town. Her family had been unsuccessful teaching her 'down' and 'wait'. Also her #dogmom was sure she was doing something wrong in her timing of rewarding her since she was basically begging for treats and or totally disengaging and doing whatever she wanted if the treat flow stopped. So I showed her the new skills and then immediately transitioned to their intended application (#huskies and other #natutaldogs are super pragmatic and often get really annoyed with arbitrary repetition so I like to show them where we're going with it right away). I then sat in my chair and chatted with her #dogmom and just ignored her completely (which is what would happen at the bar as she hung out with friends) and clicked (marked) and rewarded her for staying in the 'down'/'wait' and NOT looking at me but rather just chilling out. Many people think that a well behaved dog should be staring at their person constantly. This is unnatural, unrealistic, and super awkward and creepy. What makes sense is to parent them in a sense and just show them contextually appropriate patterns of behavior. In this case, just hang out and enjoy the scenery and night life by my side while I'm doing the same. It's not #obedience. It's common sense. They are #notaminion. My phone died but in the last few minutes she totally hammed it up and laid flat out on the ground in uber-chill mode. She was sure she was training me. Brilliant. Today my son wanted to try his hand at “dog training”. He asked if I could teach him how for when he gets his big German Shepherd. ❤️ We has an enjoyable day with @orio.the.fire.dog celebrating two years of @clenutrition being open and then we took our first trip to @threedogbakerycleveland. What a wonderful place! The kids had a lot of fun looking at and picking treats for the pups and even getting to help stir some pup cake batter! . @doggonegoodclickerco .

The power of simple games to create calm and build a non-response to typically exciting or stressful things in the environment during #offleashadventures! Yes, that's a run-on sentence! These dogs are all quite social, and would love to run over and say hello to those dogs and their humans. But they choose to stay close, snuffling kibble from the grass and being calm.
We build value for this behavior in neutral and non-exciting situations before we employ it in more challenging instances. Remember the Ds of training: Distance, Duration, Distraction. They count for games, too! .

Every week I walk my dogs in a new place. I call this an adventure walk. It's not always new, it's just somewhere we don't normally walk. This picture is at the Newport Beach Back Bay. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is a great time for me to walk, reflect and take advantage of the beautiful world I get to live in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is also a great walk for my dogs because there are new sights, new smells and new lizards to chase. My dogs are exhausted after this walk even if it's only a 20 minute walk. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I feel refreshed, more creative and excited for what's ahead in the days to come. Stopping to smell the roses is a must for dogs and humans!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What makes your dog happy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What makes your dog happy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A walk, chasing the ball, sitting next to you? Tell me in the comments below.

Happily 'forced' to make yummie dog-cookies that can go in the Pet-tutors: sardine-cookies, cheddar-cheese cookies, chicken-parmazan cookies, and a mix of kibble with commercials treats cut in smaller pieces. And the bacon for Princess-on-the-pea-Bendi. The oil that comes from the bacon I use for the cookies.
Labor intensive, for sure, but also lots of fun to make.

When a client practices in between sessions it all pays off. After several months of working indoors without distractions to obtain a good, solid, foundation, this therapy dog team in training can take their skills out into public areas to practice. This sweet, formerly abused and neglected dog who was found shot twice, ended up in a Shelter and now adopted by this saint of a woman who has 7 handicapped dogs, and one handicapped child. This is why I do what I do. Congrats to my client and this sweet dog Madge for all of their hard work and commitment. #adoptdontshop #animals #animalrescue #animalshelter #dog #digs #dogsofinstagram #dogsofworld #therapydog #therapydogsofinstagram #training #animalbehavior #savethemall #bestfriend #bestfriendgoals #humananimalbond #iaabcpets #practicemakesperfect #practicepracticepractice

You guys. This is Tito. Last week, I could barely get the leash on him to get him outside, nevermind a harness. One week of him wearing a thin leash around the house and he made awesome progress!
Video in my stories!
Give his owners serious kudos! 👍👏🐾

Brilliant. Do dogs experience stress? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most of us get a dog because they're always happy to see us. They're happy to go on a walk, and they love us no matter what. But do dogs experience other emotions, like fear, stress, anxiety, depression and learned helplessness? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately, they do.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first step to understanding when your dog is experiencing stress is to understand what stress really is. This definition comes from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. These are veterinarians that have a year of internship studying animal behavior (note: they can study a species of animal, not just dogs). They are the only true Behaviorist, in other words, dog trainers can't be Behaviorist unless they have a DVM. Let's break down this definition so that you can figure out if your dog is stressed or not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dog stress is:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) physical - that means that you can see it when you know what it looks like. You're not born knowing dog body language so you need to learn. ;)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) chemical - hormones like adrenalin and cortisol flood the body (note: hormones will ALWAYS trump an obedience command, so your dog isn't ignoring you and he's not stubborn - he's stressed).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) emotional response - 'fight or flight' barking, lunging, whining, biting, growling, snapping or trying to get away. Emotions call with stress. They don't mean that your dog is bad or that you're a bad dog mom, it means your dog is in a stressful situation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The next part of the definition say, 'to a situation' - what is going in the moment that your dog is stressed? Is he at the vet's office, in the car, looking at a dog or too close to a person he's worried about. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The next part is, 'can cause either physical or emotional distress.' If your dog 'thinks' he's in danger then he will experience emotional distress. Dogs don't think like humans. Which means, they don't rationalize or think things like, 'I think that Boxer across the street is having a bad day and that's why he's giving me the stare down.'

'Love, love, love this program. Instead of just teaching me how to control my dog in situations that make him uncomfortable, I am learning how to help my dog feel better in those situations.'⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dodger would bark at lunge at people and some dog. His mom took him though the Barkaholics Program and now Dodger can walk and remain calm. He learned to look at dogs and then back at his mom. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you're struggling with a dog that barks, pulls and lunges at other dogs, then the Barkaholics Program will help you and your dog. Over the years, I've developed a perfect strategy that works with ALL breeds of dogs to teach them to look at their triggers without barking and lunging. I've basically built my private dog training business on this system! It worked for Dodger and it can work for you!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Does your dog have any fears?

Ps. Sweet little Banksy has an amazing family that is doing a great job with him!! .

What’s missing? . . Ps. Sweet little Banksy has an amazing family that is doing a great job with him!! .

Some fun and easy polite walking work with Coco off leash. My criteria is pretty much just that she stays close to me on my left side. I use a high rate of reinforcement (lots of verbal marking + treating) and treat placement (right down my left leg, no matter where she is) to keep her engaged and successful at the game. We never work on leash/walking skills, so this was new to her. Prior to taking this video she was distracted and all over the place. Marley got treats for staying on his side out of the way...and being cute 😂 #dogtraining #positivereinforcement #markertraining #rewards #errorlesslearning #GSDsofinstagram #dcdogs #snackfeedernotpackleader #shepherds #kpct #kpactp #cbccka #iaabcpets

Dixie started #daytraining yesterday. She was a little worried without mom around so we found a fun game that helped her open up. Next time... harness and longer leash!
Is this a game your dog would enjoy?

Not all dogs who are 'hard to handle' at the vet are aggressive. Some of them, like Indy the #bordercollie here, just have such intense personalities with high sensitivity to sensory information and boundless energy that HOLDING STILL for examination and treatment are impossible without groundwork training. Indy has made a rodeo out of his last few visits to the vet, so we have started teaching him and his #dogparents #cooperativecare handling techniques to practice. In this video you can see multiple layers of what we have gotten rolling these past few weeks: establishing a specific 'mat' as the safety cue and discriminating bridge between environments (home, behavior center, vet), the learned core START behavior/permission cue of the 'side'/prone position that sets a still voluntary restraint on the part of dog and gives him a voice in the conversation about treatments, the presence and inclusion of 'tool' props that usually create immediate avoidance (no we don't staple dogs it is just for practice as a random object), the presence of and contact from TWO people to role play as owner/#vet/#vettech (often adding a second person, especially behind the dog/out of view creates fear and avoidance), the bedside manner naming of body parts and types of contact i.e.'paw, hold paw' to tell Indy what's going to happen next or is still happening, and the addition of a second hand by the rear helper by having the second hand ride the first hand upon initial contact before separating into two (Indy had previously shown instant avoidance as soon as he felt a second hand from the rear helper so we bridged the criteria by having the hands start together). This boy has the most committed #crazybordercollie family ever who has the lifestyle and patience to meet his #herdingdog needs! It would better criminal for such a sweet dog to actually become aggressive at the #veterinarian over time only because his sensitivity and hyperactivity made him difficult to wrangle. It just isn't necessary to wrestle these dogs into corners when we can take the time to give them the tools to cope. #fearfree #dogtraining #iaabcpets #petsbehavingwell #dogscience #thedogdoor #dogcityusa

“She is very shy and I’m struggling to get her outside. I dream of long walks with her.”
.
That’s the email I received from Dixie’s mom. Sweet Dixie was 4 months old and came from Puerto Rico, presumably flown in the cargo section of the plane. 😬
.
During the training consultation we had to coax Dixie out of the bedroom because she was terrified of me.
.
But it wasn’t just me, Dixie was terrified of a LOT of things, the parking garage, cars, people, everything.
But Dixie lucked out! She found an amazing dog mom that spent the time (and the money) to teach her how to overcome her fears. .
A few weeks ago Dixie went on vacation with her mom!! I saw Dixie hiking off leash, checking in with her mom and having a blast!! No one would have guested that 11 months ago Dixie was too frightened to go outside. .
Dreams do come true!! Dixie’s mom gets her long walks everyday!!! .
Thank you, Dixie’s mom for changing Dixie’s life and helping her get over her fears! You two give others hope!

“I would be doing all of this wrong if I didn’t have your help.”
.
So many stressed dog owners do the wrong things and don’t get the results they want. They end up with an out of control dog and become more overwhelmed thinking that their dog can’t be “fixed.”
.
I totally get it because I was there too! And I had to learn the hard way. I read all the wrong books, watched and literally studied all the wrong dog TV shows and ended up at my wits end with Sadie. .
Once I figured out the one thing I needed to do to get a well behaved dog (reinforce the behavior you want) then I left my corporate job and became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer so that you don’t have to make all of those mistakes.
.
There is so much crappy dog training information that it’s hard to find the good and correct information. The first step is to remember that your dog is an animal, not a human. We love them so much, as much as we love our human families, that we forget that they are animals. .
The second step is Follow this page and coming back every day. And if you’re already reading this, then you’re 50% of the way there. You now have the right guide, teaching you the right steps. Now all you need is to take some action!!

Another amazing #servicedog shopper! Winston the 10 month old #goldenretriever nailed his second lesson at learning the 'cart' behavior of walking behind and looking THROUGH the cart instead of walking next to it or looking around it. With #servicedogtraining, it's the little things! A #servicedoginpublic should be as minimally disruptive to other customers as possible. Walking next to a cart doesn't leave other shoppers room to pass with THEIR carts. So we shape (with #clickertraining) the position / pace/ orientation of walking behind the cart with their handler! We've posted tons of these before with other #servicedogsintraining. It is amazing how quickly they get it! Every dog we've taught the behavior to masters it by the second grocery visit. This, like everything we do at the #dogdoorbehaviorcenter, was done with #dogscience and #fearfree #baconandboundaires. No pain or discomfort of any sort is ever used. We use #thepremackprinciple and #freeshaping as the cornerstones to everything we do. Puppy post #5: Eat...sleep...repeat...========================================These service dogs-in-training are doing exactly what they should be doing at four days old, lots of eating and lots of sleeping. Everyone is gaining an ounce or two a day. Bella takes some much needed comfort breaks and gets lots of love but it’s not long before she runs right back to her pups.
All puppies deserve a low stress, well cared for whelping experience, whether they are service-dogs-to-be, therapy-dogs-to-be, or beloved-pets-in-the-making. Rescuing dogs is amazing and highly encouraged but if one is buying a dog or a puppy it requires effort to make sure they are bred responsibly and that the parents are well cared for and loved too. ===========================

🤚Did you know that dogs are more attentive to our visual cues than our verbal ones?
We talk so much ((crazy humans 🤭)) and so inconsistently that it's difficult for them to pick out the noises we make that are meant to be significant to them.
Use hand signals ✋☝️with your dogs to help them learn to follow your cues! Here is a visual of some of my most commonly used ones but you can use whatever you want, as long as you take the time to teach them to your dog!

Puppy post #4: Can we talk about these amazing noses for a minute? It seems only appropriate as Bella’s puppies are three days old today. Although their eyes and ears are still closed their noses have been helping them make sense of the world since the day they were born. Three days after puppies are born is when their mom’s mammary glands take on a scent that has a calming affect and helps her puppies locate her. (Bradshaw, 2011) Understanding a dog’s senses is an important foundation for teaching them. They often perceive the world in different ways than we do. ===========================Bradshaw, J (2011) Dog Sense:How the New Science of Dog Behavior Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet=========================#iaabc #iaabcpets #apdt #fearfreepets #mypolitepup #bondbasedchoiceteaching #retrievingindependence #humananimalbondintennessee #dogsofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram

Fen and I work on Cooperative behaviours and behaviours that are part of our every day regularly.
One of the behaviours that Fen was not instantly a Fen of was having a collar put on, not unlike many puppies!
Every time I put his collar on I ask (present collar) and wait for his response rather than just grabbing him and putting it on. This makes our life together so much more enjoyable. I rarely get a ‘no’ because I’ve built a history of reinforcement and respected his ‘no’s’ in the past. #iaabcpets

One of the most fundamental concepts for our puppies to learn about leash walking manners (and life in general) is that A GRIP - self control and impulse regulation - WORKS to get you where you want to go and that impulsivity (lunging, leaping, pulling, jumping, barking etc.) is simply unproductive. EVERY MOMENT with our puppies is an endorsement of something, and many of us accidentally TEACH our pups to behave in ways that we actively dislike and complain about as misbehavior when we are in fact the ones facilitating it (oops!). For instance, if a pup wants to go towards something or someone on leash and just GOES for it WITHOUT A GRIP of self regulation (as if you aren't attached to the other end of the leash) and we follow that pull/leap/surge impulse and allow the dog to move forward towards or reach their goal then we are developing a JUST DO IT! and 'never mind the human on the other end of the leash' dog. In a pup like this #bernadoodle who will be a #bigdog, that will spell big problems later! Not only will she then be hard to walk, but she will have a far less enriched life if she can't join her human family for fun experiences out in the world on the leash! Whenever the puppy here forgets to be aware of the person, we simply stop walking and prevent the pup from reaching the fun goals around her. When she is connected and aware of us and tempering her movements with self control and using a GRIP, we move forward!! #dogcityusa #meetyourdog #ashevilledogs #dogtraining #iaabcpets #petsbehavingwell #cdbc #dogbehavior #dogscience #ashevilledogbehavior #ashevilledogtraining

YOU DO NOT NEED HARSH TRAINING TO GET FAST TRAINING. Britain the #germanshepherdpuppy and his #dogmom #servicedog handler Mary have just set a new record at #thedogdoor #dogbehaviorcenter!
They accomplished 6 to 9 months worth of training in just under three months time. We started with his #servicedogtraining in May when he was 8 weeks old. Mary thought she would have a year to train him with us. She found out she was moving in August. She couldn't find a trainer in her new town who met her standards. We decided to work hard. I never imagined they could have accomplished so much in so little time. We met multiple times a week and Mary simply dove in and practiced everything we showed her, and took Britain out daily for real life practice in #downtownasheville #dogcityusa. Her commitment and skills were incredible. His were too. Their relationship is remarkable. He clearly will have important stages of development to go through, and some growing up and additional learning to do, but it's so impressive to see how much we can accomplish with our #dogpartners when we have the motivation, the right information, and right tools to build such a profound relationship with clear communication. Our dogs are all capable of so much more than we give them credit for. They have so many questions waiting to be answered and so much interest and wonder waiting to be engaged. They have much to give and teach.
Please please remember that this level of reliable good public behavior is not out of anyone's reach. Please remember it NEVER requires pain, intimidation, force, yelling, pushing, prongs or vibrations or shocks, cans of pennies or water bottles. Those things amount to poor advice and popular myths that might indeed change behavior but can have serious consequences. This is just #baconandboundaires. .
The clicker works for aggression, reactivity, helps dogs over come their fears. It also helps dogs learn to Sit, Stay and Come when called.
.
This amazing tool also has no negative side effects and is used with other species or animals, unlike choke chains, prong collars or shock collars.
.
So if you’re like me (and my clients), and you want your dog to learn as quickly as possible without any undo pain or fear, then use a clicker!

Is it Fear or Aggression or Fear Aggression? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That what I was asked by a client and at the Lovebugs Rescue Luncheon. But before we talk about any of that we have to make sure we're all talking about the same thing. We're going to start with Fear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
98% of the barking, lunging, biting, snapping and growling case I see are a result of FEAR. 98%!!!!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think we can all agree that fear is an emotion. We can also agree that fear exists in humans and animals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fear is also irrational, which means that it doesn't make sense. For example, I am afraid of spiders. I've had nightmares about them and I made my HOA cut down a tree because it attracted spiders. #truestory After screaming at a spider dangling over my outside stair case, a friendly neighbor reminded me that I'm bigger than the spider. (duh). There was no way I could walk underneath that spider to get to my front door! It was a stand off, until my neighbor got rid of him! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dog fears are a little different than human fears because your dog cannot rationalize. While I could agree with my neighbor that I'm bigger than the spider. I also wouldn't die if I had to walk underneath him to get to my door or, god forbid, he fell on my head. I know that the spider wouldn't really hurt me (physically). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your dog doesn't know that. His fears are real and true because he doesn't have the mental capacity to rationalize like humans do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Attempting to 'show' your dog that what they're fearful of isn't scary won't work either. In fact, it usually back fires, increases their fear and decreases their trust in you. :(⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What if my neighbor brought over 10 tarantulas to show me that they won't hurt me! Do you think seeing 10 spiders all at once would have helped me get over my fears?? NO WAY!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Changing fear is a process. The first step is correctly identifying what your dog is frightened of. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you know what triggers your dog??

I got to work with a beautiful #rescue #WOLF #hybrid yesterday (3/4 wolf) shaping calm behavior indoors (and around new people). He accepted me very quickly and we had a wonderful connection (I was honored because it was evidently the first time he's accepted a new person before a third date:)). His family has been trying to get him to learn to settle inside, as he paces and gets into things constantly (the whole inside thing is not exactly an intuitive habitat). Luring him into a down proved ineffective for the people as he would become too aroused when food was in front of him and try to snatch it (not settling at all). I showed them how to capture (or 'free-shape') settled behavior of him lying down and then putting his head down. I happened to be filming the process when this genius caught on and turned the table, quickly offering much MORE relaxed behavior to get me to dish out the next treat (hidden behind my back). It was so cool to see how quickly he solved a puzzle and took it to the next level! These kinds of animals don't give 2 hoots about #obedience. Engaging them through conversation about behavioral criteria for what's valuable to them is a dance and an art of #dogscience. It never ceases to amaze me working with #animals. Not to be taken for granted. #iaabcpets #petsbehavingwell #notaminion #ilovemyjob #ethology #appliedbehavioranalysis #dogtraining #ashevilledogbehavior #ashevilledogtraining #ashevilledog #wncpets #blueridgedogs #dogcityusa #meetyourdog #ashevilledogs #naturaldog #wolfhybrid #thedogdoor #kimbrophey #ethology #appliedethology

Many struggling dog owners make the mistake of focusing on how to stop a problem. They say things like, “how to I get my puppy to stop biting” “what word do I use when my dog jumps” or “what discipline is appropriate when my puppy is being bad.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They end up correcting their dog, yelling, spanking or using correction collars only to find out that their dogs gets worse or develops more problems. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Successful dog owners want to know WHY that problem started in the first place, how to prevent it from happening again and want to use humane fair training practices with their dog. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately, most dog owners fall victim to social constructs and TV hype which sells drama that isn’t effective in real life. Like you, I fell for this too. I bought every TV series, back in the day when DVD’s were popular, watched every show and did what I saw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And, like many of my clients, my dog got worse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How-To videos, blogs post and advice will NOT work if you don’t understand WHY the problem is happening. Here are three things to ask yourself when your dog is naughty:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(1) What is triggering or causing this problem? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(2) What is reinforcing your dog for that behavior? Any behavior that continue to repeat has been reinforced. Make sure you’re not reinforcing it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(3) What can you do that is safe and humane to stop the problem from repeating - maybe removing your dog from the situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s usually an easy simple answer and there’s training. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What is your dog struggling with and how can you use the questions above to stop it. Comment below if you found a solution or if you’re stuck.

Do you ever get so focused on something that you don’t want to do anything else until you’ve achieved that goal?
I totally get like that. Luckily my dogs keep me grounded and make me take a walk outside. Sometimes they even bark at me. Doesn’t Robi look like he’s about to say something? 😂
We’re a team, me and my dogs. They help me remember to take a walk, smell the roses and enjoy life.

Can an insecure dog learn from a confident dog? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, they can learn confidence, to a certain degree and they can also learn fear or barking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Winnie, the brindle Whippet in this picture was very nervous. She's the sweetest dog in her home, but one a walk she was nervous and insecure. She would pull like a freight train, sniff and basically tune you out while she dragged you around. She wasn't doing it on purpose, she was nervous and overwhelmed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I brought Sadie, my dog, to our training lesson to help Winnie feel comfortable. Winnie was super excited when she met Sadie so it was a good match. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sadie can help Winnie because she isn't nervous. And because of that Winnie was less nervous. We did several other things to help Winnie, but walking with Sadie was one of those things. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now if Sadie was nervous or barky, then that would make Winnie worse and increase her fear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having a fearful dog is tricky and you need the right plan, but walking with a dog that isn't frightened can help. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Myth Busting Monday!! 'Do Doodles bark more than other breeds of dogs?' One of my clients asked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the biggest mistakes that dog owners make is thinking that the breed of the dog determines their behavior. They think things like, all Golden Retrievers are ‘friendly.’ or Pit Bulls are ‘aggressive’ or, Italian Greyhounds are all skittish. And when you continue to make this mistake you’ll end up with an aggressive Golden Retriever.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s like saying, blonde’s are smarter than brunette’s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are 3 things that go into the behavior of a dog. (1) Environment (2) Learning History and (3) Genetics, in that order! You can control your dog environment and his learning history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But so many people get stuck on genetics. There is no gene or chromosome for “friendliness” that certain breed get and others breeds don’t. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some of you might not agree and think that genetics comes first. Research of genetic information had taught us that, the expression of genes is influenced by the environment, including the external world, as well as the internal world, which includes such factors as its hormones and metabolism.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what does this mean for you? It means that you CAN change your dog's behavior. It means STOP making excuses. It means get on our mailing list now so that you can learn HOW to help your dog, and yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What belief did you have about certain breeds before reading this?

'We want to take our dog on vacation, but only well behaved dogs are allowed in the hotel. Can you help us.'⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bernie was reactive and would bark and lunge at dogs. His parents ONLY took vacations with their dogs. Bernie's reactivity was to the point where they couldn't even walk him without him losing his mind. This also meant their vacations at popular dog friendly hotels and restaurants were out of the question.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I LOVED that Bernie's parents wanted to take their dogs on vacation and I instantly knew they were good people. For weeks, I worked with Bernie with all kinds of dogs so that Bernie, and his parents could enjoy their vacation. Bernie looked at big dogs, little dogs, and doodles (Bernies nemesis).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here's the kicker, I pulled these dogs from the daycare Bernie went to during the day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Off the leash, in daycare, Bernie wasn't reactive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On the leash, Bernie would bark and lunge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is extremely common and confusing to reactive dog owners. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dogs have three responses to fear - fight, flight or freeze. The leash is a form of confinement. Your dog can't flight or move away from something he's frightened of, so his two other responses are freeze and fight. Most dogs freeze before they bark and lunge. Bernie's reactivity had to do with the leash (which is the case most of the time).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bernie progressed nicely and did great in training. The big question was, how would he do on vacation in Carmel? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bernie's parents where so excited by how well he did, that they emailed me from their hotel room to tell me that he did great. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That was over 8 years ago. They return to Carmel every year with their dogs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you take your dogs on vacation with you?? photo credit @bernie_bin_laden

Working on reactivity/aggressive behavior is hard work. It means we have to teach things like impulse control and how to relax and then address the triggers.

'My daughter is so stressed out about her dog and we don't know what to do, can you help us?'⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lily is a young Golden Retriever that lives in Texas with her human at collage. She was coming to Southern California for summer break and the family was searching for help. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I literally ran into the family while training another #reactive Golden Retriever. The family wanted to help their daughter with her dog but they didn't know how. Then, they saw me training another reactive Golden Retriever. When I ran into them, the mother was almost in tears, saying 'nothing happens by accident, this was meant to be.' She asked me for a business card and we scheduled a consultation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lily is a very sweet Golden. She will bark and lunge at dogs and people. She's also very protective over her ball, which she's loves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first step in Lily's training plan is to tackle 4 confidence building behaviors. We will plug these behaviors in when Lily sees a dog, instead of her barking and lunging. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can watch part of Lily's lesson in our Stories.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Help your dog or puppy stay calm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Roxy, the 5 month old puppy in this picture, was chewing the furniture. I talked to Roxy's mom about using interactive toys and how they help with chewing, jumping, barking, puppy biting and on and on. She bought some for Roxy and the chewing stopped. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dogs were bred to hunt, retrieve, and herd sheep, in Roxy's case. When we take them out of their natural element we must provide mental games or brain games so that they don't get bored. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's not fair to punish a dog when they are not getting what they need. Herding dogs, like Border Collies and many other breeds, need enrichment like interactive food toys otherwise they will entertain themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I even recommend brain games, interactive food toys to my reactive and aggressive dog clients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When your dog is doing something you don't want, ask yourself if you've given her what she needs. Here are a few basics:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 2 daily walks for 20-30 minutes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 2 brain games or interactive toys⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Running, off leash (when safe)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Sniffing during a walk - which is more fatiguing than the physical part of a walk⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Toys to chase, tug or hunt⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you use interactive toys with your dog? Tell me their favorite one below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

She bought some for Roxy and the chewing stopped. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dogs were bred to hunt, retrieve, and herd sheep, in Roxy's case. When we take them out of their natural element we must provide mental games or brain games so that they don't get bored. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's not fair to punish a dog when they are not getting what they need. Herding dogs, like Border Collies and many other breeds, need enrichment like interactive food toys otherwise they will entertain themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I even recommend brain games, interactive food toys to my reactive and aggressive dog clients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When your dog is doing something you don't want, ask yourself if you've given her what she needs. Here are a few basics:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 2 daily walks for 20-30 minutes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 2 brain games or interactive toys⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Running, off leash (when safe)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Sniffing during a walk - which is more fatiguing than the physical part of a walk⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Toys to chase, tug or hunt⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you use interactive toys with your dog? Tell me their favorite one below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Check out my list of dog toys and brain games - click the link in the bio.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dogbraingames #rescue #rescuedog #lovebugsrescue⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dogtraining #dogtrainer #kpa #cpdtka ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #puppy #puppytraining ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #fear #dogfear #dogaggression #reactivity #reactivedog #reactivetrainingsystems⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #iaabcpets #iaabc #positivereinforcement ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #bordercollie ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dogs #dogsofinstagram ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dogtraining #dogtrainer #kpa #positivereinforcement #fearfree #onlinedogtraining #dogtrainingadvice #allabouttrainingdog

A great summer activity when it is too hot outside is trick training! It wears your dog out and you don’t have to worry about heat stroke! Here we are working on sit pretty! Right now we are just building core strength to stay up for a bit longer. .
.
Also note that I let her think through it instead of disciplining her for a down or helping her fix it. Let them think for themselves! .
