Is burning a tonne of calories your only focus when you walk into the gym?
Are you someone who thinks that to have a good training week you need to have burnt a certain amount of calories in each session? -
This is becoming quite a popular topic lately due to the increase in people having fitness trackers and smart watches. There has been a huge change in the way people are looking at their training basing it off on the amount of calories they have burnt. -
Do I think this is a bad thing? To be honest no I don’t but I do think people need to understand that calorie burning is a bi-product of training and that certain sessions are going to give off a different response to the body. It’s great to have a the mindset that you want to burn loads of calories and you want compete against your friends in a class environment but there are some things you need to remember. -
What do I mean? For example: let’s say I am to hop on an assault bike for 10 minutes. My session is 10 seconds on at 90-95% and 50 seconds off at 50-60%. This session is going to give off a completely different response and calorie burn to a session that if I was to go on the same bike and go for 20 seconds on at 80-85% and 40 seconds at 40-50%. Both of these sessions are the same amount of time but have different intensity’s which will result in a different calorie burn. -
If you have a personal trainer/coach or you go to classes/group training it is important that you put your trust in your mentor/coach and not in your fitness tracker. Programs or workouts are designed to improve your physical fitness and your body composition and not to burn calories. Burning calories is great but it is important that we understand that different types of training programs and workouts affect the body differently.
