Do you ever wish for a reset day? One that you think, tomorrow I am going to do this or that differently? With intention? I have been having a lot of those days lately. Not necessarily because I’m forgetting to live in the present but because I have often felt that the future could be greater with some devoted self care. Lots of things come to mind but tonight , I’m thinking books. I am going to make an active effort to read more, starting tonight. I used to read all the time but life happened and it went on the back burner. So friends, I want to know your must have reads/books, share them below- tell me them all ❤️
I am hosting my first ever book club this coming fall and am super excited to indulge in some good reads with my loves!

BOOK REVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I LOVED THIS BOOK. I’ll be honest, I was a little hesitant when I heard the initial synopsis- I was like “thank you, next” but after talking to a few people and hearing some trusted rave reviews, I decided to go for it. This book is 450 pages but it does NOT drag, and it felt like such a quick read to me. Normally I tend to be 50/50 on parental drama BS but this worked for me. You get so connected to these people’s lives, their children’s futures, the whole thing - I was so engrossed in this story. I loved that you get to see glimpses of the kid’s POV as well - it definitely added to the plot. As a parent, I could definitely relate to so much of this- how far will you go for your kids? If you’ve been holding off on this one, don’t wait anymore. Might make my top 10 of the year (!!!), I just loved everything about it. Synopsis below:
.
“Set in the fictional town of Crystal, Colorado, The Gifted School is a keenly entertaining novel that observes the drama within a community of friends and parents as good intentions and high ambitions collide in a pile-up with long-held secrets and lies. Seen through the lens of four families who've been a part of one another's lives since their kids were born over a decade ago, the story reveals not only the lengths that some adults are willing to go to get ahead, but the effect on the group's children, sibling relationships, marriages, and careers, as simmering resentments come to a boil and long-buried, explosive secrets surface and detonate. It's a humorous, keenly observed, timely take on ambitious parents, willful kids, and the pursuit of prestige, no matter the cost.”

I absolutely flew through Things You Save in a Fire and read it in one sitting last night.
.
I love quick, emotionally fulfilling books in the summer because there are just so many distractions during the day, so I need books that suck me right in and are easy to read at night. Things You Save in a Fire fell into this category perfectly.
.
I have to admit that while reading this book, my main thought was, wow I would never want to be a firefighter! 😂 I’m absolutely not the type of person who is cut out for bro-banter and pranking, let alone the actual fighting of fires! But I did think it was incredibly cute that this story was inspired by Center’s husband’s experience as a firefighter.
.
This book is a lot of things, but at its most fundamental core, it is a Me Too story. Cassie is an incredibly talented firefighter and paramedic, but her life is haunted by the assault and abandonment she experienced as a teen, and she is forced to reconcile with both of those traumas as the plot of this book unfolds.
.
We’ve been seeing many Me Too stories in fictional novels as of late, and I can’t lie, some of them are very triggering for me to read, but I appreciate the thoughts and conversations that the stories are inspiring in their readers.
.
Katherine Center’s books are all about emotion. I wish I could pinpoint exactly what it is about her writing and stories that capture such raw feelings, but wow. Her books will absolutely devastate you, but they’ll always build you back up by the end. I do think that I was more emotionally connected to How to Walk Away, but Things You Save in a Fire was a wonderful companion and an equally compelling story.
.
The thing I appreciate the most about Katherine Center is her dedication to research and getting even the littlest of details right. From plane crashes and spinal injuries in How to Walk Away to firefighting and even parkour in Things You Save in a Fire, I admire Center’s dedication to understanding the topics she writes about and representing them honestly and accurately.
.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this emotional story and think it is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for an inspirational, romantic summer read.

The start of a new month always seems to come around so fast. But that also means new @bookofthemonth choices. One of the books I picked this month is The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger. I can’t wait to start it! Will you be picking this one up? .
•
Synopsis: Good schools, stately houses, safe neighborhoods, all set against a beautiful landscape. What else could a family want? It was with high hopes for the future that four young couples separately chose this Colorado town as the place to raise their children over a decade ago. Finding each other as friends further buoyed them over the ensuing years, as they juggled the stresses of parenthood, careers, and marriage. Even now, as the kids head for middle school, their individual interests and abilities becoming more and more distinct, the group of families has remained tight. But when an exclusive new school is introduced into the mix - an elite new standard to meet - it represents, at long last, one pressure too many.
.
Gradually, throughout the community, cracks begin to form, and spread. As children are pitted against each other for coveted spots in the school, some parents shock themselves with the lengths they are secretly willing to go in the pursuit of prestige and recognition. Soon, long-buried resentments arise between friends and spouses alike, as ever more toxic instincts keep emerging. And the most shattering secret of all still lies waiting to be exposed.
.
The Gifted School is a knowing, wickedly entertaining novel that at once provokes, skewers, and forgives, loves and understands its keenly observed characters. A riveting tale of parenting and privilege, custom-made for our culture.

I’m feeling like it’s Christmas in July with all the good books out right now! @riley.sager ‘s newest thriller Lock Every Door, asks the question: If you were paid $4,000 a month to occupy a luxurious New York City apartment for three months, would you do it? Catch is, there are rules: no visitors, no nights spent away from the apartment, no disturbing other residents- who are rich and famous.
.
So, what do you guys think? Would you take the job as apartment sitter? I think I would 🤭

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which has me thinking about all of the wonderful books I’ve read over the past year by Asian and Asian American authors!
.
This stack has some of my absolute favorite books from last year, from Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You to Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, and some of my more recent favorites like Yangsze Choo’s The Night Tiger and Angie Kim’s Miracle Creek!
.
It also has a few books that I still need to read - Pachinko, Goodbye Vitamin, The Leavers, and The Wangs v. The World. Clearly, I need to step it up on tackling my TBR stack! 😂
.
Some books I wanted to give a shoutout to but forgot to include when building my stack are Joanne Ramos’s The Farm (review coming soon!!) and Vivien Chien’s Noodle Shop Mysteries, which is one of my all time favorite cozy mystery series.
.
Not only are these stories written by wonderfully talented Asian and Asian American authors, but each of these books paints a complex and rich story that explores a wide array of Asian experiences. From poignant historical fiction and stories of modern Asia, to American immigrant stories and even dystopian think pieces, these books have it all!
.
What’s your favorite book that you’ve read recently by and Asian or Asian American author? Spot any favorites in this stack?!

This is my long awaited post about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo because I don’t think I expressed enough on here about how much I loved this book. I read it in the midst of spring break, so I guess I was just too in a daze to remember to update you guys. I ABSOLUTELY ADORED this book. A beautiful diverse book that takes place in the late 1900s. Don’t let anyone tell you that diverse historical fiction doesn’t exist because this book is LIVING PROOF. 📢
-
Please enjoy my outfit inspired by the book. After reading the book, I was obsessed with old Hollywood and the luxurious life of Evelyn Hugo so I needed any excuse to dress fancy and take out my pearls. No, that is not a real martini. It’s colored water. 👍

REVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. After losing her job, boyfriend, and apartment all in the same day, Jules accepts the job of apartment sitter at a famous New York City Apartment. The job is three months long and pays $12,000. Seems perfect, but the job comes with strange rules and strange people. And then there's the apartment building. The famous Bartholomew. The building itself is super creepy; there are gothic style gargoyles, an old-fashioned elevator, and strange wallpaper that looks like faces staring back at you. The history of the building and its residents are even creepier. But go read the book to find out the history, because I don't want to give too much away!
.
.
I loved the format of this book. It is written as a countdown. The first chapter starts with Jules waking up in a hospital. Clearly something horrible has happened at The Bartholomew. Then the remainder of the book is the five days leading up to when she awakes in the hospital. I love a good countdown. It's actually one of my favorite formats in thrillers, it really builds anticipation. It also gives the reader more information than the characters- you know that in 'x' amount of days something will happen. I like that. I like knowing something the characters don't.
.
.
If you like thrillers, 'who-done-it's', books with twists, or books that are centered around the venue of the story (in this case, a historic apt. building), then you will definitely like Lock Every Door!

Right now I’m not enjoying this book as much as I thought I was going to. I am struggling between the second and third person narratives. Hopefully, if I push through the next couple of chapters, I’ll get used to it and have a smoother reading experience! 🙌🏻

This month, I am working really hard to get caught up on my #bookofthemonthclub picks before I have to pick more for August. With that in mind, during my marathon reading binge this past weekend, I went ahead and started on one of my July picks, Things You Save in a Fire by @katherinecenter ⁣
🔥 ⁣
Cassie is a top Texas firefighter in her district and she is receiving an award. But that is where her joy ends. She is hard on the outside; she pushes back against anyone who tries to get to her softer side. She puts her life into her job as a firefighter, not believing in joy or love because she still holds on to anger and grief. When has an explosive experience with a past acquaintance AND gets a call from her estranged mother that she needs her to come to her aid, Cassie is forced into a new fire department all the way in Massachusetts. ⁣
🔥 ⁣
She goes to Massachusetts fully expecting the backlash against her being a female firefighter and the difficulties that go with it; but what she wasn’t expecting was to find joy and love. Things to Save in a Fire by Katherine Center is book 87/65 in my #goodreadschallenge2019 is a heartfelt look at how forgiveness and empathy can lead to healing and finding joy and love in your life. I enjoyed this book and read it in a little over a day. The author clearly did her research and put her own thoughtful spin on the story, which I really enjoyed. I give this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for being a quick, heartfelt read that put empathy at the forefront of the story... and to be honest, we all need more empathy in this world! #whatandiereads #bookstagram #bookofthemonthclub #botm #fiction #womensfiction #readersofinstagram #booksharks #bookreview

Synopsis below: .

I often get sent DMs asking about different books that I post, but the book that received the most Interest is Three Women by Lisa Taddeo. When I shared this on my stories it received so much love! This edition is one of this months choices from @bookofthemonth. I’ll definitely be making time to read it this month. How about you? .
•
Partial Synopsis from Goodreads: Desire as we’ve never seen it before: a riveting true story about the sex lives of three real American women, based on nearly a decade of reporting.
.
It thrills us and torments us. It controls our thoughts, destroys our lives, and it’s all we live for. Yet we almost never speak of it. And as a buried force in our lives, desire remains largely unexplored—until now. Over the past eight years, journalist Lisa Taddeo has driven across the country six times to embed herself with ordinary women from different regions and backgrounds. The result, Three Women, is the deepest nonfiction portrait of desire ever written and one of the most anticipated books of the year.

Ah my favorite read of the summer so far!! The novel takes place as a court room drama but my favorite part was that it was broken up into 3 sections. It is told from the perspective of the father, then the daughter, and finally the mother. A crime is committed. But it will have you guessing to the very end who played what role. •

Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center
Release date August 13th 2019 I want to start out saying I don't read romance novels. I got this book for a reading challenge, and didn't think I would like it. Well let me tell you, I was so wrong. This story had me laughing throughout the whole book. And crying the last couple pages. I almost felt giddy reading this book. Haha Things you save in a fire is a book about heroes and strength and forgiveness and last but not least love. 'So to succeed in my new job, I basically need to be an asexual, androgynous, human robot that's dead to all physical and emotional sensation.' Yep simple. 'Just be a machine,' she said. 'A machine that eats fire.' Cassie is a firefighter who has to transfer to a firehouse thousands of miles away from her home for several reasons. The story is about what she comes up against proving that a woman can be a excellent firefighter. I will be reading more of Katherine Center's books because honestly this book was amazing. 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐#ilovetoread #ilovetoreadbooks #ilovebooks #bookobsessed #bookstagram #book #bookworm #booklover #booksarelife #bookofthemonth #bookofthemonthclub

I’m about to start doing this #konmari thing to my living room bookshelf. Getting rid of my old clothing was easy but I know this is going to be more difficult. Am I really going to read some of these again? Do I actually have time to read 😆?

Two women, different paths in life, meet. One is a wanderer and the other a rule follower that has never stepped outside of her “societal path”. When their worlds intersect, we find our thoughts on motherhood, culture, and identity questioned. 🏠
I enjoyed this journey and will be thinking about it for some time. This was easily a 5 🌟 read! I can’t wait to see the Hulu adaptation and how it will further challenge my thinking!

QOTD: How many books do you read at a time?⁣
⁣
Usually I tend to finish one book before starting another, but that concept has completely disappeared this month 😂⁣
⁣
Right now I’m tackling these three titles, all different genres yet each offer something unique that make it easy to go back and forth without confusing myself. I plan on finishing this book stack by Friday night, so keep me accountable in achieving this goal! 📚

Took this one to the top of our hike yesterday so naturally had to snap a picture. This books has definitely been cute so far. Super easy and fast read that is perfect for mindless summer reading. Although it’s pretty predictable, it’s got a rom-com style that will having you wishing you’re on the beaches of Maui. Looking forward to something with a little more depth for my next choice, but if you’re looking for a vacation read — this might be your pick! 👍🏼

Posted @withrepost - use #readersofboston to be featured! • @_mason_emily JUNE 2019: I read four books this month, I am getting into the busiest part of the year. Lots of social obligations, travel, and everything starts to ramp up at work as we head into the second half of the year. Reading for me will be an outlet for the next few months. My June reads were a bit of a mix, all were recommended to me. See my reviews below ⬇️.
.
.
.
.
Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman (Book): 5 ⭐️ - Quick read for me! Last book for June and it didn’t disappoint, another thriller following a couple enjoying their honeymoon until they find something they weren’t meant to.
The Other Woman by Sandie Jones (Hardcover): 5 ⭐️ - Couldn’t put it down! Finished in about a week, whenever I had a free moment I was devouring this book! Psychological thriller with such a BIG twist at the end, I never saw it coming!
An American Marriage by Tataryi Jones (Hardcover): 2 ⭐️ - Not my cup of tea. This book was recommended to me by so many people but it just wasn’t for me. I found it to be a very sad story about a young couple who did not get to experience a life together.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (Book): 3 ⭐️ - An interesting read just not for me. I found the storyline a bit hard to follow and the ending a little underwhelming. It was definitely an easy read, perfect beach read.
On the reading list for July:
Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown
The Farm by Joanne Ramos
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
Have you read any of these? I want to hear your thoughts!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book is getting a lot of hype right now. I didn’t love it (unpopular opinion??) The slow build, the vast amount of characters, and the mild amount of drama left me feeling a bit less than gifted. 😂 The last couple chapters were good, but didn’t necessarily fit. #colorado #bookofthemonthclub #read

The Night Tiger 🐅✨ by #yangszechoo
.
One of my favorite reads so far this year! Historical fiction interlaced with magical realism, this was a beautifully written story that I could barely put down!
Read it for:
✨ Weretigers! (and other awesome folklore)
✨ An ensemble of flawed characters based on the Confucian virtues their names represent
✨ An interesting view into 1930s colonial Malaysia
✨ A controversial but heartwarming love story
✨ Complicated family dynamics & a coming-of-age story
✨ A compelling mystery

Have you ever read a nonfiction book that read like a fiction novel? If not, then you should definitely read Three Women by @lisadtaddeo⁣
👩 ⁣
There is a reason why this book was listed as the @people magazine #bookoftheweek and has been featured on many news networks recently. This book is one of the best of the year. I knew after reading the @bookofthemonth Preview that this was going to be a brilliant read. This book was written with the utmost care by its author, who spent the last 8 years of her life researching and being immersed completely in the lives of the three women she featured in her book, Maggie, Lina, and Sloane. ⁣
👩🏻‍⚖️⁣
The book is a poetically written look at all of the subtle nuances of a woman’s desire. The stories of the three women in this work of nonfiction is the most honest and accurate account of how women are often faced with the reality of judgement, ridicule, and humiliating circumstances that are consequences for acting on their desire, contrary to our male counterparts. I found myself feeling so many emotions throughout reading this one- anger, frustration, helplessness, and hopefulness that maybe a change is coming. ⁣
👩🏽‍💼⁣
Knowing that Taddeo starting writing this novel before the rise of the #metoo movement and has published it in the middle of a gradual, but still significant turn in the role of women makes me hopeful, and thankful, that Lisa Taddeo and her subjects were brave enough to tell their stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ goes to book 85/65 in my #goodreadschallenge2019 📖 This one, hands down, is one that everyone should read this year.

The Book of the Month books for July were all so great, it was VERY difficult to choose this month! I had to add Recursion this month since I’m seeing it everywhere. I don’t read much science fiction so I’m hoping this one hooks me and I love it too! Who subscribes to BOTM? What were your picks?

#EvelynHugo may have had Seven Husbands, but she would have only needed one if he made her bacon every weekend like @nicklaborde. I mixed it up with a @skinnymixes Iced Cinnamon Roll latte and some Chai Chia Pudding. The perfect, easy way to start my Sunday. Sunday. A day to refuel your soul and be grateful for your blessings. Take a deep breath and relax. Enjoy your family, your friends, and a cup of coffee.

I’d like to add animals to this...and then quote is complete.
•
Hope your Sunday is full of all the right things. This was my second July @bookofthemonth choice and it’s a doorstop of a tome- did anyone else choose it? •
This week is short as I head up to NYC to help my daughter while she has her tonsils out...a drag for her but I’m glad I can be there’s I’ll be bringing The Gifted School in hopes of wrapping it up. And, I’m almost done with Leaving Atlanta for @blessyourheartbookclub - who is joining us for that?
•
Hope your coffee is strong and your breakfast involves chocolate and bread too 😍

Joining @bookofthemonth club has been one of my best decisions of recent years. I used to be so overwhelmed by the number of awesome books that come out each year, so I'd end up sticking to 'classics'. But now, thanks to how well-curated it is, I'm 20+ books in and have found many new favorite books and authors!

A Nearly Normal Family... Fellow bibliophiles, this was so good!!
Stella, teenage daughter of a lawyer and a pastor, is accused of murder. It is told in the fathers voice, Stella’s voice, and the mother’s voice.
