A Sikh Genocide was carried out by the Indian Government in June 1984. To understand the history of what happened in 1984, we must go back to at least 1947 (Partition of India). Mandeep Singh delivers a fact filled synopsis of the timeline from 1947 onwards, including inspiring Sakhis (stories) of the Gursikhs (Sikhs of the Guru) who bravely stood for Dharam (righteousness) and did not waver in their faith. A must watch video…

An art tribute to Shaheed Bhai Mohar Singh ji and his wife Shaheed Bibi Pritam Kaur and his daughters Shaheed Bibi Satnam Kaur and Shaheed Bibi Waheguru Kaur. This Gursikh family sacrificed everything they had during the Indian Army’s brutal attack on Darbar Sahib in June,1984. This is a real life story about a brave family that scarficed their lives for the Khalsa Panth: Bhai Mohar Singh of the Damdami Taksal and his wife Bibi Pritam Kaur and their daughters 8 year old Satnam Kaur, 6 year old Vaheguru Kaur. They sacrificed their lives defending Sri Harmandir Sahib in June 1984. Bhai Sahib’s was no ordinary family they had converted into Sikhi and were regarded as Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale’s closest aides. When the army attacked Sri Harmandir Sahib they held their positions until the tanks came into the parakarma (walk way around Sri Harmandir Sahib). '...Bibi Pritam Kaur and her two younger children helped the defence by refilling the ammunition for the guns, and brought in food and water for the defenders...' On the 6th of June, Bhai Mohar Singh recited his final Ardass to Guru Ji. It has been said, Bhai Mohar Singh, Bibi Pritam Kaur, and their two young children fell onto the army tank near where Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji fell. Today in Sikh History | June 7th, 1984 – #Remembering1984 (Sound on for the experience)
In the early hours of the morning, the troops discover the bodies of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his closest followers in the basement of Akal Takht Sahib.
The day was spent in clean up operations flushing out any remaining snipers and collecting the dead bodies. Soldiers were openly walking in Sri Harimandar Sahib with their shoes, drinking alcohol as well as smoking. Blood and bodies were strewn all over the broken marble of the parkarma. With putrefying corpses floating in the sacred pool of nectar and the smell of death everywhere.
The Darshani Deori, the entrance gate of Sri Harimandar Sahib which houses many priceless treasures was destroyed and looted. Although fighting had now died down, the central library complex was mysteriously burned down. Many priceless manuscripts, some in the Gurus’ own handwriting were lost forever. •⠀⠀⠀

Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindrawale was the jathedar of Damdami Taksal(Sikh parchar/gurmat Organization). Sant ji was actively involved in doing the parchar of Sikhi and educating the masses to follow Sikhi lifestyle and to avoid indulging in wrongdoings. Sant ji Motioned the Anandpur Resolutions(Sikh demands for equality) in which Sikhs demanded fair representations in the nation of India and demanded Sikhi to be accepted as a seperate religion(which Sikhs are from the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji). The government's at the time couldn't face the charisma and was afraid of the truth parchar(preaching) of Sant Ji and planned to destroy sikhi to its core. On 4th June 1984 the Indians forces attacked harmandir sahib with huge amount of forces and artillery. Baba Jarnail Singh and other Kharkhu Singh's(warrior singhs) rose and gave shaheedi(sacrifice) to defend the heart of the Sikh Qaum, Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib like how Sikhs have been doing from the times of invasion of Massa Rangar. And with this the world saw how Sikhs fought against a mighty army of a nation thus proving that true Sikhs that follow the teachings of the Guru's are Singh's(lions). 29/5 錫克聖地 - 阿姆利則

A picture of Sri Harmandir Sahib from the internet as it was not allowed to take picture of it. 圖二: A picture of me getting my turban tied by my cousin. 圖三: A picture of my cousins and us under the statue of maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Not only was that the case, but these protesters were normal people from nearby villages with pitchforks, and were met with military personnel responding with guns. A genocide, a slaughter.

Moring prayers were on way when suddenly bombs started being dropped and launched. Not only this but canons and other heavy artillery was used throughout the whole complex - this was without warning so the innocent were trapped, many died, many wounded : all of them scared for life if the luckily (unluckily) made it out alive.
This is the start of the worst scenes to begin. Nothing before compared to just what was about to take place. Here is where all the suffering and pain and clearly be seen, these are the images stamped into the memories of everyone. A community with trauma, a community of survivors (not to say such truama wasn't endured before or after this event)

June 3rd 9:00am (Part 1/2)
On top of the state Curfew on top of that they added a 'shoot on sight Curfew'. This meant they could shoot anyone - obviously the innocent would be shooted too. So people were forced to stay in their houses, imagine the fear that would have caused? Family members still haven't returned home, and now you can't even leave to find them. How many people knew many of those would never return home? Not even the news of their deaths would reach their homes.
On top of this massive breach of democracy, there was a media blackout. Many many so called democracies adopt this strategy so no one can get information in and out, so there would be no international influence (that would tell them they are wrong for doing this.) This blackout meant there was no news coverage on the army, journalists told to leave, as well as phonelines cut. This was all preperations for the operation (operation Bluestar) - they made sure news could not get around. How were you meant to tell loved ones it wasn't safe? How were you meant to tell worried loved ones you are safe? A vital part of democracy is the media, this was stripped off us.

June 2nd 12pm : the government makes the military petrol the state of punjab. They make it so no one can enter or leave the state, especially amritsar.
Into the city of Amritsar they slowly started to make sure goods and services couldn't get in and out of the city (soon including the media, journalists - an integral part of democracy). What is most haunting is that despite the military knowing just what events were about to take place at the darbar shaib ji (harmandir shaib / golden temple) - they were about to attack - they let the inoccent come into the complex but were not allowed to leave. The time was that of a religious festival so the darbar shaib was even more BUSY than normal. They let the innocent come in, but not leave. The slaughter made even worse....

On the 10th June 1984 after 10 days of terror, the guns finally fell silent. The last Sikh fighters who had been holding out from the 1st June, were killed. Giani Puran Singh’s account gives an accurate description of this incident: “There were 4 Singhs in the basement of the Bunga Jassa Singh Ramgarhia who were giving a tough fight to the forces. They had also pulled down 3 personnel of the army who had ventured too close. The authorities wanted these people to surrender but they wanted a mutually responsible person to mediate. I was then asked to mediate but first of all I asked the army officers of a guarantee that none would be shot only arrested and later law would take its own course.
They were not ready for this and wished me to talk to the Brigadier who too was noncommittal. They then asked me to inquire if the three army personnel were alive. The reply received was that no live personnel were there in the basement. At this the Brigadier asked me to leave and that they would themselves deal with them. These men in the basement fought the whole day, the whole night and also the next day when Giani Zail Singh came to visit the ruins of Akaal Takht. Some thought that they had also aimed for Giani but it was not so. These people did not know that Giani was coming. If they knew before hand, they would have definitely put a bullet through the ‘tyrant’ but they were totally cut out from the outside world. A colonel of the commandos attempted to flush out these men in the basement with a gun and light arrangement but as soon as he entered the basement, a burst of LMG wounded him and it was later learnt that he had succumbed to the injuries in the hospital.

9 June 1984
Jodhpur Detainees
After the Sikh resistance had been overcome, only a few snipers remained. Following the execution of pilgrims, immediately after the main battle, those that survived were rounded up, detained by the Army and charged as terrorists: '379 of the alleged 'most dangerous terrorists' were forced to sign a common confessional statement and thereafter served a common charge sheet that they were all Bhindranwale's closest associates and comrades-in-arms engaged in 'waging war against the State'. They were, therefore, detained under the NSA and are now being tried at Jodhpur under the Terrorist-Affected Areas (Special Courts) Act of 1984. As we were curious regarding the extent of danger these hardcore 'terrorists' posed to the State 'with the intention to establish a State independent from the Government of India to be known as Khalistan', we visited the homes of some of the Jodhpur detainees and met their families or relatives.
The evidence collected established beyond doubt that none of the Jodhpur detainees we succeeded in profiling are 'terrorists' but rather all of them are completely innocent, ordinary persons, whose only crime was that they had all gone to or were coming from the Golden Temple as devotees or pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple for the Guru Purab on June 3, 1984 or farmers gone to the Temple to deliver village donations of grain to the S.G.P.C. or students gone to pay obeisance at their holiest religious shrine, the Harmandir Sahib.' These detainees were detained for up to 5 years, before in the face of worldwide condemnation and protest they were finally released.

9 June 1984 Jodhpur Detainees After the Sikh resistance had been overcome, only a few snipers remained. Successful launch of #sikhgenocide84 book tonight at Gray’s Inn, London. Thanks to Lord Carlile, Robin Marsh and @ravisinghka for their excellent speeches and to everyone who attended. Biggest take home from the evening is that we must recognise these events as a genocide rather than anything else. These were not “riots” etc, but a genocide. #genocide #sikhgenocide #sikhgenocide1984 #sikh #india #battleofamritsar #operationbluestar #operationshudikaran #operationwoodrose

Refusal to Provide Aid to Wounded Pilgrims:
Many accounts of Operation Bluestar, including the SGPC's White Paper on the Punjab Problem, relate that the Red Cross was refused permission to enter the Temple complex and the wounded were left to suffer for days. Many people died of dehydration as they were refused water.
Bhan Singh told the members of the Citizens For Democracy team: 'They [the Army] treated the inmates of the complex as enemies and whenever there was any person wounded on account of the firing, no Red Cross people were allowed to enter, rather the Red Cross personnel had been detained beyond Jallianwalla Bagh' more than a kilometre away from the main entrance to the Golden Temple from the Chowk Ghanta Ghar side.
The CFD report, 'Oppression in Punjab' remarks: In accordance with the UN Charter of Human Rights, the Red Cross is permitted to go in aid of the wounded right inside the enemy territory, but in Amritsar in June, 1984, the Red Cross was not allowed to enter the Golden Temple - a respected and hallowed part of our country - in aid of Indians under attack from the Indian Army. It only means that the attack was so brutal and the battle scene so grisly, that there was much to hide from public scrutiny, even if it be that of a neutral agency called the Red Cross. This also explains perhaps why Press censorship had already been imposed, the last of the journalists were hounded away and the Press was not allowed to go inside the Golden Temple up to June 10, when they were taken on a guided tour of the complex for the first time since the Army operation began almost a week before.
The Christian Science Monitor reported on the 8th June 1984: 'On Saturday, medical workers in Amritsar said soldiers had threatened to shoot them if they gave food or water to Sikh pilgrims wounded in the attack and lying in the hospital'

It’s always a privilege to be able to go to Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) when I’m in India. There is this sense of calm and peace. It’s considered one of the holiest places and not just for Sikhs. So you can imagine the horror when in 1984 the Indian government attacked the temple. In over a week the gurdwara was destroyed, valuable literature and historical objects destroyed. This event then set off a chain of events that led to the Sikh Genocide. Whatever excuse is given to justify this attack is never going to justify the innocent lives lost of worshippers. Nothing can ever explain the need for this kind of violence and trauma.
This may have happened 35 years ago, but we still demand justice. We stand tall in the face of oppression and injustice!
Swipe left to see the aftermath of the attack.

By the end of June, more than 8000 Sikhs had been arrested from different parts of the Punjab. Indian security agencies started detaining Sikhs in different army camps. The atrocities commited by the indian army in the villages of the Punjab were so multifarious, inhuman, barbaric and shameful that an 'encyclopedia of atrocities' can be compiled.
.
To protest against the indian invasion of Darbar Sahib and Shri Akal Takhat Sahib, Dr. Sadhu Singh Hardard, Dr. Ganda Singh (Prophet Sikh Historian), Bhagat Puran Singh and even Khushwant Singh returned the awards of Padma Shri. Simranjit Singh Maan (a deputy Inspector General then) resigned his post as a protest. But there were some touts of the government, who came forward in support of the barbaric indian regime.
.
After the invasion of Darbar Sahib, the role of the Indian media, television, radio, newspapers (all the newspapers are owned by fundamentalists) was malicious, misleading, anti-Sikh and shameful. The indian television released a statement by Giani Kirpal Singh, the phoney and dishonest caretaker Shri Akaal Takhat Sahib, stating that Akaal Takhat Sahib and Darbar Sahib had not been damaged. History and Guru Panth shall never forgive this sacrilege of the court of Guru Hargobind Patshah by Kirpal Singh.
.
The shrieks of thousands of Sikh Sikh young men lie buried in the police torture cells. The Sikhs were burnt with red hot rods, their naked bodies were pressed with heavy wooden rollers, they were hanged upside down, both their legs were broken apart, their private parts were given electric shocks etc. One even shudders at the thought of such heart-piercing, barbaric, savage torture of the Sikhs by the ferocious indian army and police, but the Sikhs of the Guru, even during extreme torture, remained in chardikalaa. Most if the Sikhs were burned to death for their crime of having 'Khande Baatte di Pahul' from Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale.

Two cannons were reemployed to fire at the Bunga, gaping holes were formed on the Parikrama end but the men within were safe. I saw from the roof of Harmandir Sahib that two grenadiers had been put on the grenade shooter and a continuous barrage of grenades was being used but they still survived. Burnt red chilly bags, chilly powder and smoke granades were thrown in; one of them came out to be greeted with a hail of bullets while the others finally were silenced on the 10th.”

Day 9 - 9th June 1984
Following the executions of surviving pilgrims within the Harmandir Sahib complex, the remaining survivors are rounded up, detained by the Army and charged as terrorists: “379 of the alleged ‘most dangerous terrorists’ were forced to sign a common confessional statement and thereafter served a common charge sheet that they were all Bhindranwale’s closest associates and comrades-in-arms engaged in ‘waging war against the State’.' 'The evidence collected established beyond doubt that none of the Jodhpur detainees we succeeded in profiling are ‘terrorists’ but rather all of them are completely innocent, ordinary persons, whose only crime was that they had all gone to or were coming from the Golden Temple as devotees or pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple for the Gurpurab on June 3, 1984 or farmers gone to the Temple to deliver village donations of grain to the S.G.P.C. or students gone to pay obeisance at their holiest religious shrine, the Harmandir Sahib.”
~ Citizens for Democracy; Report to the Nation: Oppression in Punjab (Bombay, 1985). These detainees were detained for up to 5 years, before in the face of worldwide condemnation and protest they were finally released.
The government orders the shooting of unarmed protesters in New Delhi, Sri Nagar (Kashmir) and Punjab.
Some firing still continues within the Golden Temple Complex.

Jodhpur Detainees
After the Sikh resistance had been overcome, only a few snipers remained. Following the execution of pilgrims, immediately after the main battle, those that survived were rounded up, detained by the Army and charged as terrorists:
.
“379 of the alleged ‘most dangerous terrorists’ were forced to sign a common confessional statement and thereafter served a common charge sheet that they were all Bhindranwale’s closest associates and comrades-in-arms engaged in ‘waging war against the State’. They were, therefore, detained under the NSA and are now being tried at Jodhpur under the Terrorist-Affected Areas (Special Courts) Act of 1984. As we were curious regarding the extent of danger these hardcore ‘terrorists’ posed to the State ‘with the intention to establish a State independent from the Government of India to be known as Khalistan”, we visited the homes of some of the Jodhpur detainees and met their families or relatives.
.
The evidence collected established beyond doubt that none of the Jodhpur detainees we succeeded in profiling are ‘terrorists’ but rather all of them are completely innocent, ordinary persons, whose only crime was that they had all gone to or were coming from the Golden Temple as devotees or pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple for the Guru Purab on June 3, 1984 or farmers gone to the Temple to deliver village donations of grain to the S.G.P.C. or students gone to pay obeisance at their holiest religious shrine, the Harmandir Sahib.”

These detainees were detained for up to 5 years, before in the face of worldwide condemnation and protest they were finally released.

2 weeks after my birth, this happened. I remember growing up hearing stories from mom and nan about the 84 riots and how someone from our family, our relatives died. I never understood the significance until recent years. Relatives I had never known. I got to live. To survive. To breathe. To grow. They did not. Why was their life insignificant to others? I just keep thinking..Had our parents not immigrated to the west, would it have been us, the ones born post 1984? Those were our uncles, aunts, moms and dads, grandfathers, grandmothers, neighbors, our friends. Strangers even. My mind cannot even fathom this. After 30 years I now realize the extent of just how atrocious it was. To be killed for being Sikh. A human. Let us not forget our history and where we come from. Otherwise, who are we and what do we really know about ourselves? Its interesting we've heard of the Halocost in nazi germany, but we didnt learn this happened to our Sikhs in Punjab India. 🔆😑😪😔

Page 155 of 'Singh is Queer'
In June of 1984, Indira Gandhi, the prime minister of India at the time, attacked the Holiest Sikh Gurdwara, during one of the busiest times for Sikhs. She stated 'Sikhs are a political problem' after learning that Sikhs were not going to back down from our stance of equality/liberation/activism. She led a terrorist attack against Sikhs, stating that one of our most prominent leaders, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was a terrorist. .
.
Sant Bhindranwale Ji advocated against drug/alcohol use, promoted the keeping of kes, and wanted to teach Sikhs how to read/write Gurbani. He did A LOT more for Sikhs, just google it- he was a legitimate SIKH ACTIVIST fighting against the corruption of the Hindutva government. He wanted PEOPLE to be safe and free from all oppressions. He wanted to bring Sikhs closer to oneness and Pramathma. .
.
So the Indian government decided to murder him and thousands just like him. In June of 1984, countless Sikhs were killed in cold blood. While thousands fought back, thousands also died. 1984 was one of the deadliest years for Sikhs, The parents and grandparents who survived carried on the legacies of their ancestors and passed it onto us... .
.
We, the next generation of Sikhs, will ensure the Hindutva government pays for the crimes it committed against our Sikh peoples. Document everything my dear Sikhs, do not allow any government to rewrite our history. We must remember where we come from, we must teach the future Sikhs who we are, we must write down our truths.. this is how WE CONTINUE TO RESIST. .

Day 8 - 8th June 1988
All forms of aid are denied to the surviving victims. The Red Cross is refused permission to enter the Harmandir Sahib complex and the wounded are left to suffer for days. Many people die of dehydration as they are refused water.
The Christian Science Monitor reported on the 8th June 1984:
'On Saturday, medical workers in Amritsar said soldiers had threatened to shoot them if they gave food or water to Sikh pilgrims wounded in the attack and lying in the hospital.' The CFD report, 'Oppression in Punjab' remarks: 'In accordance with the UN Charter of Human Rights, the Red Cross is permitted to go in aid of the wounded right inside the enemy territory, but in Amritsar in June, 1984, the Red Cross was not allowed to enter the Golden Temple - a respected and hallowed part of our country - in aid of Indians under attack from the Indian Army. It only means that the attack was so brutal and the battle scene so grisly, that there was much to hide from public scrutiny, even if it be that of a neutral agency called the Red Cross. This also explains perhaps why Press censorship had already been imposed, the last of the journalists were hounded away and the Press was not allowed to go inside the Golden Temple up to June 10, when they were taken on a guided tour of the complex for the first time since the Army operation began almost a week before.' #OperationBluestar #NeverForget1984
