Thailand unique culture, food and business ecosystem has provided some exciting developments in the Startup scene. It’s the one market that has a huge dependence on corporate venture funds, its language differences mean it’s hard to penetrate for western startups, and it’s a country heavily into food, tourism, pop culture and fashion.
On July 1st to 3rd, I’ll be back in Thailand with @dtac.accelerate running my workshop on Measuring Product Innovation, which provides product managers and startups an objective means to measure the market demand and adoption of their product. It’s based on the discipline known as Growth Hacking, but with a stronger focus on the testing of options as it relates to behavioural based targeting and incentivised adoption.
It’s an area that proven tough for product managers, entrepreneurs, and innovators, as they seek to build a data driven decision framework to justify investment, and drive accelerated paths towards customer growth, while learning and adapting their customer acquisition cost, and lifetime customer value. When companies think about reasons to go remote, they typically think of benefits like saving money due to no longer having to pay for office space of enabling a 'Digital Nomad' lifestyle for the founders to sip cocktails on a beach in Bali while generating tons of 'passive income'.
But when you talk to founders and members of full remote companies, they will tell you that it's not about saving money (at least not when you invest in proper remote office equipment and regular retreats for your team). Furthermore, it's about creating a flexible and inclusive work environment for people to thrive in, to broaden the access to talent and to respond to the needs and changes of acting global and wanting to expand their business to new markets.

Every time I see teams or individual talk about which „hacks“ they want or should be utilizing, something dies inside of me. While hacks have the aura of a shiny new object you want to try out right away, they often-times don’t lead to a sustainable change in behavior (or metrics).

Instead, you want to encourage yourself and your teams to adopt habits. Adopting a habit might be harder to pull-off than executing a one-off hack, but the results will help you to improve the way you build products in the long-term instead of cranking up a vanity metric in the short term.

So, a typical assumption resulting from such a conversation would be: 'Users only want a maximum of eight content pieces in their weekly newsletter.' Or, assumptions are opinions which get turned into a discussion vehicle.

The problem here is that an assumption on this level only embraces experimentation and validation (more on the difference between these two in a future post) on the surface. This leads to an approach to revisiting this assumption (later).

The core of what differentiates an assumption from a hypothesis is the falsifiable metric attached to it.
So, instead of saying 'Users only want a maximum of eight content pieces in their weekly newsletter.' you want to come up with something like 'We believe that sending out a newsletter to existing users increases our Weekly Active Users (WAU) by 10% three months after release.'

Thailand unique culture, food and business ecosystem has provided some exciting developments in the Startup scene. It’s the one market that has a huge dependence on corporate venture funds, its language differences mean it’s hard to penetrate for western startups, and it’s a country heavily into food, tourism, pop culture and fashion.
On July 1st to 3rd, I’ll be back in Thailand with @dtac.accelerate running my workshop on Measuring Product Innovation, which provides product managers and startups an objective means to measure the market demand and adoption of their product. It’s based on the discipline known as Growth Hacking, but with a stronger focus on the testing of options as it relates to behavioural based targeting and incentivised adoption.
It’s an area that proven tough for product managers, entrepreneurs, and innovators, as they seek to build a data driven decision framework to justify investment, and drive accelerated paths towards customer growth, while learning and adapting their customer acquisition cost, and lifetime customer value. In his work, Miller refers to customers as “people who don’t work here,” and each of these people has a story to tell. To improve CarMax’s ability to develop cognitive empathy – one of nine different types of empathy that are performed by different areas in the brain – Miller has instituted what he calls “listening labs,” and these have three simple rules aimed to help business people recognize that customers are people first:⠀

'Do you understand this product?', 'Will you buy that?', 'How's the distribution between three systems amongst our users?'. What all of these questions have in common is that they are horrible questions to ask users in an interview or survey. However, I see many people coming straight out with it by adding questions like this into their primary research. Customers are (at best) confused because they don't know how to answer these questions for you. At worst, they answer them from the top of their head, and you think you found a vein of gold ('Yes, boss, you were right. They will buy this product.'). 🛑
The thing is that these questions are not per se wrong. They're the right questions in terms of what you want to know from your research efforts. But that's the thing; they're research question to guide your actions, e.g., in an interview. You can’t just ask people what you want to know. 🤔
Erika Hall summarized the intent behind research questions neatly:
„Your research question and how you phrase it determines the success and utility of everything that follows. If you start with a bad question or the wrong question, you won’t end up with a useful answer. We understand this in daily life, but talking about research in a business context seems to short-circuit common sense. Everyone is too worried about looking smart in front of each other.“

I like to encourage teams to take on a different perspective: One which treats shipping as a muscle you need to train over and over. You start with small weights and frequent reps, until you‘re one day able to confidently step towards new heights. Ship often and ship small. This way, shipping becomes a regular part of your routines instead of this big act you only rarely dare to embrace.

Most people I talk to about this issue are in one of two camps: Either they still think focus groups are the shit for doing 'user research' (spoiler: they're not) or they condemn user research completely and encourage everyone to just execute whatever is on their mind. As always, the answer to the question whether you should do research, whether it's qualitative or quantitative and which techniques you should combine depends on a variety of factors. But it's important to understand that even if you add the term 'user' to the word research, it doesn't mean that you should stop after having talked to users. Approach colleagues from other departments like sales or customer support to develop a holistic perspective of the needs of your users. Do what feels right for your individual product strategy, the goals of your team and the resources you have at hand. But seriously, drop he focus groups!

Instead, Brent recommends building teams of people as enduring corporate assets, and then focus on maximizing the return on those assets – what we call return on team. It might feel like an extra effort in the short-term, but will pay off very quickly.

Face-to-face is the most effective form of communication. But what do we do if we can’t get the talent in the same place and/or at the same time? Mark Kilby and Johanna Rothman, authors of “From Chaos to Successful Distributed Agile Teams”, have some pointers:⠀

Determine Hours of Overlap:⠀
Allow teams to decide when it is best to collaborate and pick working hours that suit their individual preference. However, they suggest at least a minimum of 4 hours of overlap.⠀

Create Multiple Inspection Points:⠀
In addition to regular retrospectives, set time aside to problem solve together. Create a list of small issues the team wants to tackle, prioritize and work on them as a team. This allows the team to make small changes and experiments to how they work together so that they can evolve faster. Bigger issues are saved for a retrospective.⠀

Face-to-face is the most effective form of communication. But what do we do if we can’t get the talent in the same place and/or at the same time? Mark Kilby and Johanna Rothman, authors of “From Chaos to Successful Distributed Agile Teams”, have some pointers:⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Determine Hours of Overlap:⠀ Allow teams to decide when it is best to collaborate and pick working hours that suit their individual preference. However, they suggest at least a minimum of 4 hours of overlap.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Create Multiple Inspection Points:⠀ In addition to regular retrospectives, set time aside to problem solve together. Create a list of small issues the team wants to tackle, prioritize and work on them as a team. This allows the team to make small changes and experiments to how they work together so that they can evolve faster. Bigger issues are saved for a retrospective.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Create a buddy system for new team members:⠀ Pair one person with the new team member to work through an integration backlog. No matter how often you‘ve iterated the slides and speaker notes (similar design iterations) and no matter how man dry runs you gave (similar to running experiments for validation), experiencing how people react to it in „real life“ is something you can‘t simulate. Make sure to look for indicators of „success“ when launching: How engaged is the audience? How many pictures were taken? Did people approach you afterwards sharing direct feedback?

Over the last four days, I had the honor and pleasure to join the first JAM Product Leaders Weekend in Wales as an attendee and speaker. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with a lot of like-minded product people to exchange experiences and opinions.

Here‘s another way to mix-up your next ideation session or Product Discovery: Worst Possible Idea.
This is a fun one and will loosen-up every workshop scenario. The goal here is to push the participants to only solve the framed challenge with the worst possible ideas. I try to force people into the illegal space using questions like 'What would get you in jail?'. The exercise also includes listing the attributes of the worst ideas and investigating which attributes of the ideas make them bad. As a next step, try to build the exact opposite of the worst idea, to find the 'good' ones.
